About the Dispute:

  • The South Pennar, originating in Nandi Hills, passes through Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh before reaching the Bay of Bengal via Tamil Nadu.
  • Tamil Nadu objects to Karnataka’s project along the Markandeya river, a tributary of South Pennar, affecting water supply to several villages.
  • Despite an 80% complete storage facility in Kolar district, the dispute persists, leading Tamil Nadu to seek a tribunal’s intervention for water-sharing resolution.
About Pennar River

Origin and Flow:

·    Originating in Nandi Hills, Chikkaballapura district, Karnataka, the Pennaiyar River traverses Tamil Nadu before reaching the Bay of Bengal.

Alternate Names:

·    Known as South Pennar River, Dakshina Pinakini (in Kannada), and Thenpennai/Ponnaiyar/Pennaiyar (in Tamil).

Key Details:

·    Second longest river in Tamil Nadu (497km), following the Kaveri.

·    Second largest interstate East flowing river basin among the 12 basins between Pennar and Cauvery.

·    Significant cities along its banks include Bangalore, Hosur, Tiruvannamalai, and Cuddalore.
