India-Nigeria Relations

• India and Nigeria have decided to increase their people-to-people exchanges and work together in the energy, mobility, and other sectors, according to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Along with Yusuf Tuggar, his counterpart, he co-chaired the 6th Joint Commission Meeting between Nigeria and India in Abuja.

Various Discussions

• They discussions were about potential cooperation between the two nations in the areas of energy, renewable energy, transportation, healthcare, fintech, agriculture, and security and there was also talks on the growth of economic cooperation particularly trade and investment between the two nations.
• According to Dr. Jaishankar, promoting multipolarity and rebalancing as well as returning the world to its natural diversity are top priorities on the international agenda today;
• Speaking at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos, they discussed India and the Global South, pointing out that the country’s changes over the past ten years have made it possible for it to lead by example and to collaborate with and support the region. Dr. Jaishankar emphasized that planetary progress cannot occur in the absence of the Global South’s advancement.
• One of the major accomplishments of India’s G20 presidency of India was turning the group’s focus back to the Global South, the sustainable development goals, clean and green growth, woman-led development, health, energy, and food security.

About Nigeria

• Nigeria, a west African nation on the Gulf of Guinea, boasts a wealth of wildlife reserves and scenic spots and its capital is Abuja.
• Waterfalls, thick rainforests, savanna, and uncommon primate habitats can be found in protected areas like Yankari National Park and Cross River National Park;
• Nigeria is one of the top producer of oil in African continent.

India-Nigeria Relations

• Nigeria and India have historically had cordial and pleasant relations. Two years prior to Nigeria’s independence in 1960, India opened a diplomatic mission in that country in 1958;
• Both nations have participated in the leading forces in the global fight against colonialism and apartheid, closely collaborating in a number of international forums;
• Following a historic visit to Nigeria in September 1962, Indian Prime Minister Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru and Nigeria’s first Prime Minister Tafawa Balewahad forged a bond of friendship, mutual respect, and goodwill between our two nations’ leaders;
• Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s historic State visit to Nigeria in October 2007, which followed a 45-year hiatus, gave our bilateral ties a significant boost.
• The two nations have become even closer due to shared colonial history, a sizable multiethnic, multireligious, and developing society with a high proportion of youth.
• As seen in numerous meetings at the United Nations, World Trade Organization, etc., both nation have similar viewpoints on global political, social, and development issues and both nations vehemently reject terrorism in all of its manifestations;
• Many members of the Indian diaspora are still found in African nations like Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Mauritius;
• Development Cooperation:
  • India is becoming Nigeria’s development partner by providing developmental assistance in the form of concessional loans and capacity building programmes.
  • $100 million US Lines of Credit (LOC):
    • India provides Nigeria with development assistance and the execution of two agreements for the extension of Lines of Credit, valued at US$ 30 million for a gas-fired turbine electricity generating station in Nigeria’s Cross River State and US$ 31.05 million for three sub-projects, which include 50kVA mini-grids in Kaduna State, two 60 MVA transmission substations, and solar-powered streetlights, is underway;
    • An additional US$ 38.95 million Line of Credit offer has been repurposed. The contract is yet to be signed.
