What is NAM?

  • A group of states that aimed to maintain their independence and did not formally align with either the US or the USSR is known as the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM);
  • Established in 1961, the goal of NAM has been to “establish an autonomous route in global politics that would not lead to member States turning into pawns in the conflicts between the great powers;”
  • It is the second biggest grouping of various countries after the United Nations;
  • NAM History:
    • The idea of a nation’s policies not being in line with others dates back to the Congress of Vienna (1814–15), which recognized Switzerland’s neutrality—the nation’s pledge to stay out of other people’s disputes;
    • The Asia-Africa Bandung Conference, held in Indonesia in 1955, provided the impetus for the group’s fundamental idea;
    • This movement began in the 1950s as an attempt by certain nations to stay out of the divisive Cold War environment between the pro-American capitalist nations of NATO and the Soviet communist nations of the Warsaw Pact.
    • The phrase “non-aligned movement” was initially used at the fifth conference in 1976, wherein the participating nations were referred to as “members of the movement” and the goal of non-alignment was to preserve one’s capacity for impartial judgment and political freedom.
    • The Havana Declaration of 1979 stated that the organization’s mission was to protect “the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security of non-aligned countries” in their fight against imperialism, colonialism, neocolonialism, racism, and all forms of foreign subjugation.
  • Contribution of India in NAM: The NAM was founded in 1961 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, on the initiative of Indian Prime Minister Nehru, the Yugoslav President, the Egyptian President, the Ghanaian President, and the Indonesian President and it resulted in the first Conference of Heads of State or Governments of Non-Aligned Countries.

India-Angola Relations

  • Relationships between Angola, one of the continent’s largest oil producers, and India stretch back to Angola’s pre-independence days and are supported by a thriving energy partnership.
  • From the time Angola gained independence in 1975, India stood by its fellow country in its fight for freedom from Portuguese colonial rule. The Indian leadership has maintained strong ties with Angola’s ruling political elite ever since.
  • In 1985, diplomatic ties were established between India and Angola and worked together in several multilateral forums.
  • Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi made the first VVIP visit from India to Angola in May 1986, and Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos made the reciprocal trip in April 1987.
  • Namaste India, an Indian cultural and culinary festival, has also been arranged by the Indian Embassy in Angola to mark 75 years of India’s independence. Beginning on November 4, 2022, the festivities lasted for a week.
  • Indian Community in Angola: There are about 4000 Indians in Angola, mostly working as professionals in the offshore oil fields and as employees in the businesses owned by Indians who are primarily involved in trading, supermarkets, catering, and other services; these individuals also work in industries that deal with plastics, metal, steel, and clothing. Indian companies are working on several projects in the non-oil sector, including scrap metal, steel, trading, plastics, retail, hospitality, and other services.
