About National Green Tribunal ( NGT):

  • Establishment: The NGT is constituted under the National Green Tribunal Act of 2010.
  • Powers and Jurisdiction:
  • Established for the efficient handling of cases related to environmental protection, conservation of forests, and natural resource management.
  • Holds appellate jurisdiction, operating as a court.
  • Not bound by the procedural rules of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908, but guided by principles of natural justice.
  • Principal Places of Sitting: New Delhi serves as the Principal Place of Sitting, with additional sitting places in Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata, and Chennai.
  • Mandate and Timely Disposal: Mandated to dispose of applications or appeals within six months of filing.
  • Composition:
  • Comprises a Chairperson, Judicial Members, and Expert Members.
  • Term of office is five years with no reappointment eligibility.
  • The Chairperson is appointed by the Central Government in consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
  • Selection Process:
  • A Selection Committee appointed by the central government selects Judicial and Expert Members.
  • The tribunal can have between 10 to 20 full-time members.
