Chilla-i-Kalan’

  • Today marked the start of “Chilla-i-Kalan,” Kashmir’s harshest winter season, with temperatures dropping several degrees below freezing in many locations.
  • In Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Qazigund, and Kokernag, the minimum temperature fell below freezing.
  • The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Kashmir will see mostly dry weather over the next few days.
  • Many slow-moving bodies of water have frozen as a result of the temperature drop.
  • The hardest 40 days of winter, known as “Chilla-i-Kalan,” occur when a cold wave strikes the area, bringing with it sharply low temperatures.
  • The last day of “Chillai-Kalan” is January 31.
