Amrit Bharat Station scheme (ABSS)

News

1309 railway stations have been identified for development under the Amrit Bharat Station scheme, according to a statement made today by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

About the Scheme

  • The Ministry of Railways launched the ABSS in February 2023 with the goal of continuously developing stations using a long-term strategy.
  • The program, which was introduced to renovate 1,309 stations nationwide, is predicated on long-term master planning and its implementation according to the requirements and preferences of each station.
  • ABSS scope of work includes:
    • Improving station amenities such as entry and exit, circulating areas, waiting halls, toilets, lifts/escalators, cleanliness, and free Wi-Fi Kiosks for local products through schemes such as ‘One Station One Product’;
    • upgraded systems for passenger information;
    • executive Waiting Areas;
    • designated areas for landscaping;
    • business meetings, etc.
  • Goals of the ABSS:
    • The ABSS seeks to improve facilities above and beyond the Minimum Essential Amenities.
    • It also intended to build city centers and roof plazas at the station.
    • It provides for the addition of new amenities as well as the improvement and replacement of existing amenities.

About Indian Railways

  • About Indian Railways 169 Years of History:
    • On April 16, 1853, Indian Railways was founded (by then Governor General Of India ‘Lord Dalhousie’).
    • The first passenger train traveled 34 kilometers between Thane and Bori Bandar in Mumbai.
  • Special Mascot:
    • The National Institute of Design created the ‘Bholu,’ a Shubhankar, as the Indian Railways’ mascot in 2002.
    • On the 150th anniversary of the railways, Bholu, an elephant disguised as a railway guard, was unveiled.
