HOW MPs ARE SUSPENDED?

Why in the News?

Process and Duration of Suspensions:

  • Presiding Officers (Speaker in LS, Chairman in RS) play a crucial role.
  • MPs directed to withdraw are named and then suspension motion is moved by the House.
  • Suspension can last until the end of the session, with a maximum duration of five days for severe misconduct.
  • Lok Sabha introduced a rule in 2001 allowing automatic suspension for five days without a motion, not adopted by Rajya Sabha.
