PM as chief guest at Navy Day function in Sindhudurg

News:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the Chief Guest at the Navy Day function in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, today, December 4.
  • In the evening, the Prime Minister will unveil a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Rajkot Fort.
  • He will also see the “Operational Demonstrations” later on, which will be conducted by Indian Navy ships, submarines, planes, and special forces from Sindhudurg’s Tarkarli beach.

About Navy Day:

  • This marks the inaugural instance of the Indian Navy arranging an event of this magnitude outside of a naval station.
  • The Indian Navy observes Navy Day on December 4th in remembrance of “Operation Trident,” the Navy’s daring attack on Karachi Harbor during the 1971 War.
  • The celebrations held at Sindhudurg this year honor the rich maritime legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, whose seal served as the inspiration for the recently adopted new Naval Ensign.

About Operation Demo:

  • The Operation Demo is being held to honor the personnel’s valor and courage, as well as their determination to accomplish the impossible in difficult circumstances.
  • The event will also have the display of modern Indian Navy vessels and aircraft at the event.

 

HISTORICAL GLIMPSE OF NAVY IN INDIA:

●  India has a long maritime history that dates back roughly 6000 years and records date back to the Indus Valley Civilization and since then, Indians have advanced rapidly in their maritime trade and expansion.

●  India’s trading connections with nations around the Pacific and Indian oceans date back thousands of years and naval expeditions have travelled far and wide, reaching Malaya and the Sumatran islands, from the Kalinga empire in 5–10 CE to the Chola empire in 984–1042 CE.

●  Indian shipbuilding abilities were so advanced in the 14th and 15th centuries that they were able to build ships that could carry over a hundred men and enormous amounts of cargo for trade.

●  The seeds of the Indian naval power’s decline were sown when Europeans arrived in India. Despite the fact that there have been a few historical examples of powerful naval forces, such as the Mughals, the Gujarat kingdom, and the Marathas.
