A deepfake refers to a type of synthetic media, typically in the form of videos or images, that is created or altered using artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning techniques.

·  In a deepfake, the appearance or voice of a person in existing content is manipulated or replaced with someone else’s, often resulting in a highly convincing and realistic portrayal.

·  Deepfakes can be used for various purposes, ranging from entertainment to more malicious activities, such as spreading misinformation or creating deceptive content.

Government’s Advisory on Misinformation and Deep fakes:

·  Social media intermediaries are urged to exercise due diligence and take reasonable measures to detect and combat the dissemination of such content.

·  The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology emphasizes the necessity for prompt action in line with the IT Rules 2021.

·  Any content identified as misinformation or deepfake must be promptly removed within 36 hours of being reported.

·  Non-compliance with the IT Act and Rules may lead to consequences as outlined in Rule 7 of IT Rules 2021, potentially impacting the legal protections afforded to organizations under Section 79(1) of the IT Act.
