Why in the news?

  • The Central Vigilance Commission is observing the Vigilance Awareness Week 2023 from 30th October to 5th November, 2023 .
  • The theme of this year’s Vigilance Awareness Week is “Say no to corruption; commit to the Nation’’.
  • As a prelude to Vigilance Awareness Week 2023, the Commission had earlier issued instructions detailing a three-month campaign period (16th August 2023 – 15th November 2023)
  • The Commission is also issuing three publications, Best Practices in Vigilance Administration, Increasing transparency through the use of technology and Public Procurement: Challenges and Way Forward..

Vigilance Awareness Week

  • Vigilance Awareness Week is observed every year during the week in which the birthday of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (31st October) falls in.
  • The week-long observance aims to promote integrity, transparency, and accountability in public administration.
  • It is a means to raise awareness about the ill effects of corruption and the importance of ethical conduct.
  • It serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to combat corruption and uphold ethical values in society.

Central Vigilance Commission

  • The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) is an apex governmental body in India established in 1964.
  • It operates as an independent and autonomous agency responsible for addressing corruption and promoting transparency and integrity in public administration.
  • It acts as an advisory body to the Central Government on vigilance-related matters.
  • CVC is not an investigating agency.
  • CVC is only responsible to the parliament and is not controlled by any Ministry.
  • It possesses the authority to investigate allegations of offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
  • It has the authority to recommend disciplinary action, including suspensions, dismissals, or legal proceedings against errant officials.
