Global Maritime Summit

News: It is a platform to showcase global best practices, foster investment partnerships and chart a new and bright course for our collective future.

  • The 3rd edition will be held from 17th to 19th October 2023, at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, where a global platform that will serve as a catalyst for investment, collaboration, innovation, and promotion of opportunities in India’s maritime sector. More than 30 countries are expected to participate in this summit.
  • This event was organized by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways as a precursor to the Global Maritime India Summit 2023.

Objective of the Event

  • To create an international market for key decision makers and industry leaders.
  • To provide opportunity for start-ups, researchers and incubators.
  • To showcase the latest technology and emerging trends in the maritime sector.
  • To recognize and celebrate achievers in the maritime sector.

India’s Maritime Sector

  • “India’s maritime sector has long been a driving force behind our nation’s economic growth.  
  • India is one of the fastest-growing and large economies in the world, with a GDP growth rate of 1% as of 2018-19.
  • Approximately 95% of India’s merchandise trade is done through sea ports.
  • India is one of the biggest peninsulas in the world with a coastline of ~7,516.6 kms and 200 major and non-major ports.
  • Indian ports are categorized into two parts: Major ports (under central Government administration) and Non-Major ports (under state Government administration).
  • The ports in India serve as a backbone for EXIM, international trade, coastal shipping and cruise shipping.
  • Over the years, the Indian maritime sector witnessed a remarkable transformation as a result of the strong efforts of our government, industry stakeholders and the unwavering support of our maritime community.

Chess comeback after 13-year hiatus in 19th Asian Games at Hangzhou in China

  • The 64-square fight, which is slated to begin on September 24, 2023, will have two time controls for men and women: rapid and standard. 
  • Each control will result in four sets of medals. Standard time control will be used for the team championship and rapid time control for the individual event.
  • The focus of attention will be on teenage sensation Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, who placed second in the 2023 Chess World Cup.
