Kuiper Belt

News: Recent discoveries by astronomers provide persuasive evidence that an Earth-like planet may exist in our solar system’s distant Kuiper Belt.

  • The Kuiper Belt is a vast, doughnut-shaped region in our solar system, extending beyond the orbit of Neptune. It is home to countless icy objects, including dwarf planets like Pluto, Eris, and Haumea, as well as smaller comets and asteroids.
  • A flat ring of tiny, icy bodies known as the Kuiper Belt, also known as the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt, orbits the Sun beyond the range of Neptune.
  • It is named for Dutch-American astronomer Gerard Kuiper, who postulated the existence of such a region in the 1950s.
  • These millions of icy objects are known as trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) or Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) together.
  • Relics from the early history of the solar system can be found in the Kuiper Belt.
  • The majority of the observed short-period comets, especially those that orbit the Sun in less than 20 years, are likely to have come from this source.
  • Small icy things like comets, asteroids, and dwarf planets dominate the Kuiper Belt’s makeup.
  • One of the most well-known Kuiper Belt objects is Pluto, which was originally thought of as the ninth planet in our solar system.
  • Pluto was downgraded to a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 2006, in part because of its location in the Kuiper Belt.
