15th BRICS Summit 

News: The 15th BRICS Summit will be held while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Johannesburg, South Africa.

  • From August 22 to August 24, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Johannesburg, South Africa. BRICS was founded in 2009.
  • Members include South Africa, Brazil, Russia, India, and China. 2009 saw the first BRICS summit in the Russian Federation.
  • China will host the 13th BRICS conference in 2022. In 2023, South Africa will host the 15th BRICS Summit.
  • The world’s top five emerging economies—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—are together referred to as BRICS. (BRICS)
  • The acronym “BRIC” was created in 2001 by British economist Jim O’Neill to refer to the four emerging economies of China, India, Brazil, and Russia.
  • According to the abbreviation B-R-I-C-S, each year the members alternate holding the position of chairman.
  • Together, the BRICS countries make up around 40% of the world’s population, about 30% of its GDP, and 16% of its commerce.

Controversies

  • Vladimir Putin was the subject of an arrest order from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in March 2023 for war crimes committed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.  As a signatory to the ICC, South Africa must uphold the warrant.
  • The African National Congress (ANC), which controls the South African government, extended diplomatic immunity to all invited leaders in May 2023. Uncertainty surrounded whether Putin’s arrest would be avoided if he went.
  • It was common practice in South Africa to grant such immunity to participants of international conferences conducted there, according to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation. As a result, the opposing Democratic Alliance filed a lawsuit to order an arrest.

9th India Region Conference Of The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA)

News: The 9th India Region Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) was opened by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

  • It was the ninth Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Conference.
  • Enhancing Democracy and Good Governance in the Digital Age is the theme. Headquarters: London, United Kingdom.
  • The Empire Parliamentary Association (EPA), forerunner of the CPA, was established in 1911.
  • It was authorized to operate as a charity under British law on October 22, 1971. It is a group that supports parliamentarians from Commonwealth nations.
  • The goal is to encourage greater mutual understanding and collaboration among Commonwealth countries that use the parliamentary system.
  • Mission: To advance knowledge of parliamentary democracy’s economic, social, cultural, political, and constitutional components, with a focus on the Commonwealth nations.
  • It offers the infrastructure for routine dialogue, information sharing, and communication between Commonwealth Parliament members.

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA)

  • One of the Commonwealth’s oldest organizations is the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).
  • It is a membership organization that was established in 1911 and unites Members who share a common interest, respect for the law, individual rights, and freedoms, as well as a desire to advance the ideals of parliamentary democracy, regardless of gender, race, religion, or culture.

Over 180 Legislatures (or Branches) from nine different areas of the Commonwealth make up the Association. It gives lawmakers and legislative staff a huge opportunity to work together and share best practices on areas of shared interest.

Hurricane Hilary 

News:  On August 16, 2023, Hurricane Hilary, a powerful Category 4 hurricane, developed in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

  • The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale classifies hurricanes by rating their wind speed on a scale of 1 to 5. Major hurricanes are hurricanes with a category rating of three or above.
  • It is Southern California’s first tropical storm since 1939. A combination of circumstances, including a high-pressure system over the western U.S., a low-pressure system over the eastern Pacific, and an El Nino event that warms the ocean water towards the equator, are causing Hurricane Hilary to move towards California.
  • These elements foster an environment that is conducive to tropical cyclone formation and movement northward along the Mexican and Central American coasts.
  • However, due to the cold ocean, cold currents, and unfavorable winds near the U.S. West Coast, the majority of these storms weaken or turn westward before reaching California.
  • Because it has kept its strength and veered more north than typical, Hilary is an anomaly.

AgniKul Cosmos 

News: AgniKul Cosmos, a Chennai-based space technology start-up, is preparing to send the first 3D-printed rocket into orbit, the Agnibaan SubOrbital Technological Demonstrator (SOrTeD), into orbit.

  • The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) both support the trip of AgniKul Cosmos.
  • The Agnibaan SOrTeD is a programmable launch vehicle that can be used for single- or dual-stage launches. It is propelled by the innovative Agnilet engine from AgniKul.
  • Liquid oxygen and kerosene are the propellants for Agnilet, a 6 kilonewton (kN), 3D-printed semi-cryogenic engine. Agnibaan SOrTeD, in contrast to conventional sounding rockets that take off from guide rails, will ascend vertically and fly along a predetermined path while performing precisely timed manoeuvres.
  • It can be configured in five different ways to deliver payloads up to 100 kg to an altitude of 700 kilometres. The initial phase of the world’s first 3D-printed rocket’s ascent will be Agnibaan SOrTeD.

Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre

  • The Department of Space’s (DOS) Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) is a single-window, independent nodal body that runs on its own. It was established in response to reforms made to the space sector to enable and streamline private player participation.
  • Building launch vehicles and satellites, offering space-based services, sharing space infrastructure and premises under the control of DOS/ISRO, and establishing new space infrastructure and facilities are just a few of the various space activities that non-governmental organizations are responsible for promoting, enabling, authorizing, and supervising.
  • The organization serves as a liaison between NGEs and ISRO and makes recommendations on how to make better use of India’s space resources and expand space-based activities. In collaboration with ISRO, it also evaluates the expectations and needs of private actors, such as academic and research organizations, and looks into solutions to meet these needs.

INS Trikand 

News: When the Indian Naval Ship INS Trikand recently arrived in Iran’s port city of Bandar Abbas, it was welcomed with open arms.

  • The Indian Navy’s INS Trikand is a guided-missile frigate of the Talwar class. Of the second batch of Talwar-class frigates that the Indian Navy ordered, it is the third and last ship.
  • The Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia, constructed it. On June 29, 2013, INS Trikand was commissioned into the Indian Navy. The Trikand Fort, which is close to Porbandar, Gujarat, is where the name of the ship comes from.
  • It functions under the Mumbai-based Western Naval Command and is a part of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet. The spacecraft has cutting-edge sensor and weaponry systems.
  • Torpedoes, a 100mm main gun, and numerous anti-ship and anti-aircraft missile systems are included. It uses stealth technology, such as a smaller radar cross-section, to increase its capacity to survive in dangerous conditions.
  • It is capable of fending off attacks from the sea thanks to its anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities, which include torpedo launchers and ASW helicopters. The ship is built to perform a variety of naval activities.
