Nevado del Ruiz Volcano : Increase Seismic Activity
News: Following an increase in seismic activity, residents of the higher slopes of Colombia’s Nevado del Ruiz volcano are being evacuated.
The Andes Mountains of Colombia, South America, are home to the ice-covered stratovolcano known as Nevado del Ruiz.
It is a stratovolcano made up of numerous layers of magma that alternate with pyroclastic rocks and hardened volcanic ash.
Nevado del Ruiz’s volcanic action first appeared about two million years ago.
It is a component of the perilous Pacific Ring of Fire as well as the old Ruiz-Tolima volcanic complex.
The volcano has previously erupted several times, with the most disastrous explosion taking place on November 13.
has continued to be active since the 1985 explosion, and several smaller eruptions took place in the years after the catastrophe.
