Snailfish: Key Facts

News: The deepest documented fish ever captured on camera was a snailfish that was swimming 8,336 metres below sea level near Japan.

In the Izu-Ogasawara Trench near Japan, researchers dropped an autonomous “lander” camera to record the snailfish.

The Izu-Ogasawara Trench is situated at the meeting point of the Pacific Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate in the western Pacific Ocean.

Snailfish:

It is a deep-sea species that is also known as a sea snail.

The known species of snailfish number over 400, and their sizes vary from a few centimetres to almost a metre.

They have loose, scaleless skin that can occasionally be prickly and are elongated, squishy, tadpole-shaped fish.

They are well suited to surviving in the harsh conditions of the deep water.

In the North Atlantic, North Pacific, Arctic, and Antarctic oceans, snailfish can be found in cold water.
