United Nations High Seas Treaty Began In New York
News: In New York, a fresh round of talks on the UN High Seas Treaty got underway.
- The Paris Agreement for the Ocean, also known as the United Nations High Seas Treaty, and the pact to address biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction have been under negotiation for a number of years.
- The proposed pact pertains to ocean waters that reside outside of countries’ Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ), which extend from their coastlines out to a distance of 200 nautical miles or so (Countries have special rights for exploration till 200 nautical miles).
- The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Rules of the Sea (UNCLOS) mandated that the treaty be negotiated.
- It replaced the four Geneva Conventions of April 1958, which dealt with the high seas, the continental shelf, the fishing industry, and the preservation of living resources on the high seas, respectively.
