Black Galaxy

News: Using ALMA, a study team from Italy has discovered an illusive black galaxy known as the “invisible galaxy.”

  • A galaxy with no or few stars is thought to be called the Dark Galaxy.
  • They got their name because there are no stars to see, yet they might be found if they have a lot of gas in them.
  • The galaxy was found by scientists using the Gravitational Lensing Method. The method is typically employed to find dark matter.
  • Modern telescope ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) is used to examine light from some of the Universe’s coldest objects.

  • The telescope is able to detect wavelengths of millimetre or submillimeter size emitted by cold objects (earliest and most distant galaxies in the Universe)
  • The telescope is a multinational endeavour involving teams from Europe, Japan, the US, Canada, Chile, and the Atacama Desert in Chile, South America.
