India’s Green Hydrogen Challenge
News: The National Green Hydrogen Mission, which sought to produce 5 MMT of green hydrogen annually and add 125 GW of additional renewable energy generation capacity by 2020, was recently approved by the Union Cabinet. The major obstacles to the Mission’s successful execution were addressed in the article “India’s Green Hydrogen Challenge,” which appeared in the Indian Express on February 10, 2023.
- The Prime Minister announced the National Green Hydrogen Mission during his Independence Day speech in 2021, and the Cabinet authorised it in January 2023.
- The Mission’s overall coordination and implementation will fall under the purview of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
- Goals:
- Establish India as a centre for the production of green hydrogen, and by 2030, add 125 GW of new renewable energy capacity in addition to 5 MMT of annual green hydrogen production capacity.
- Decarbonize the energy sector, provide a sustainable replacement for fossil fuels, and establish an export market for green hydrogen and its derivatives.
- enhancing domestic manufacturing capacities, reducing the cost of producing and purchasing equipment for renewable energy sources through subsidy support, and
- The Mission has been given a starting outlay of 19,744 crores ($2.3 billion) for the following five years, distributed among the following sub-schemes.

- 388 crores for the mission’s additional components
- SIGHT consists of two financial incentive programmes that, respectively, will concentrate on homegrown electrolyser production and environmentally friendly hydrogen generation.
- A public-private cooperation for research and development called SHIP (Strategic Hydrogen Innovation Partnership) will also be established as part of the Mission.
