Mission to eliminate Sickle Cell Anaemia by 2047

News: Human RBCs are impacted by sickle cell anaemia. When a person has the illness, their RBCs, which are typically rod-shaped, distort. Their forms are changed. RBCs are primarily used to transport oxygen to various bodily areas. The ability of RBCs to carry oxygen is compromised in a person with sickle cell anaemia. If the illness is not treated, negative outcomes result. The Government of India started the Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission in the Union Budget of 2023. By 2047, the GoI hopes to have completely eradicated the disease under the Mission.

Mission

  • Complete eradication by 2047
  • raise awareness of the condition
  • The project will examine seven billion people.
  • A screening of people ages 0 to 40 is required.
  • To be targeted are tribal areas
  • Principal Obstacle to Mission: Consanguineous union
  • Consanguineous marriage occurs when both the boy and the girl in the union have sickle cell characteristics. There is a 25% probability that such marriages may result in infants with sickle cell anaemia. It can be difficult to prevent consanguineous marriages in India.
  • Sickle cells are those cells that take on the shape of a sickle and take the form of a C. They morph into themselves.
