UNGA adopts resolution on ‘Education for Democracy’ co-sponsored by India

News: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution titled ‘Education for Democracy’ that reaffirms the right of everyone to education.

 

  • The resolution urged Member States and other stakeholders to include education for democracy in their educational standards, according to a UNGA statement. The resolution also emphasised the need for states to collaborate with relevant parties in order to eliminate digital disparities.
  • Notably, the Mongolian delegate highlighted at the conference that his country’s delegation had initiated this biennial resolution in 2012 because of its steadfast belief in the connection between education and democracy.
  • The official also mentioned that the text has been improved by a number of Member state submissions. The proposal calls on Member states to work together with pertinent parties in order to implement comprehensive measures to close the digital divide and advance digital inclusion. The resolution also urges member nations to address the problems.

  • India has frequently been referred to as the “Mother of Democracy” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the country has always been an advocate for democratic values around the world. Additionally, all children between the ages of six and fourteen will receive free and required education thanks to India’s Right to Education.
