Theme release for National Science Day 2023

News: At a ceremony in New Delhi, the Union Minister of Science and Technology unveiled the National Science Day 2023 theme which is “Global Science for Global Wellbeing.”

National Science Day

• In 1986, the Indian government declared February 28th to be National Science Day (NSD).
• Sir C.V. Raman made public his discovery of the “Raman Effect” on this day in 1930, for which he was given the Nobel Prize.
• When molecules bend a light beam, the result is known as the Raman Effect, which results in a shift in the wavelength of the light.
• A small portion of the light that travels through a clear, dust-free sample of a chemical compound exits in directions different from the incident (incoming) beam.

History of National Science Day

• In 1986, the Indian government was requested by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) to declare February 28 as National Science Day.
• Today, schools, colleges, universities, and other academic, scientific, technical, medical, and research institutes across India mark the event.
• National Science Day (NSD) was established on February 26, 2020, and NCSTC announced the creation of the National Science Popularization Awards to honour exceptional work in the fields of science and communication.
• The Indian Department of Science and Technology gave the “National Award for Science Communication” to five Indian institutes on February 28, 2009. These honours are given to acknowledge the contributions made by people, governmental organisations, and non-governmental organisations to the popularisation of science in India.
• The Vikram Sarabhai Community Science Center received the top honour in 2009 for its work creating educational resources for science and running training sessions for science educators.
