Vadnagar town, Modhera Sun Temple, Unakoti sculptures added to UNESCO’s tentative list of World Heritage Sites
Why in the News?
The renowned Sun Temple at Modhera, the rock-cut sculptures of Unakoti in Tripura, and Vadnagar town in Gujarat have all been added to the list of potential UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
- India now has 52 sites on the UNESCO Tentative List as a result of this. The list highlights India’s vast natural and cultural variety and demonstrates how diverse our heritage is.
- The Sun Temple, Modhera dedicated to Surya Dev is the earliest of such temples which set trends in architectural and decorative details, representing the Solanki style at its best.
- Vadnagar is a municipality under the Mehsana district of Gujarat.
- A multi-layered historic town, the history of Vadnagar stretches back to nearly the 8th century BCE.
- The town still retains a large number of historic buildings that are primarily religious and residential in nature.
- Unakoti, a historical sacred site connected to Shiva worship, is situated in the northeastern part of Tripura.
- A vast gallery featuring a variety of towering low-relief images in a distinctive style, the website is a work of artistic genius created by humans and is situated in a forested location.
About UNESCO tentative list
- An “inventory of those properties that each State Party plans to consider for nomination” is contained within.
- States Parties are urged to submit their Tentative Lists of places they believe are outstandingly valuable examples of both natural and cultural heritage that should be added to the World Heritage List.
- At least a year before submitting any nominations, States Parties should submit Tentative Lists to the World Heritage Centre. These lists should not be taken as exhaustive.
