  • India has unique characteristics with a hierarchical network of varied sizes of urban settlements like metropolises, cities, and towns.
  • They appear like ‘urban galaxies’ – with naturally developed scales between entities, interconnected and located within easy reach.
  • These networks have their unique lifestyles, and unique patterns of habitat based on local resources, climate, and available characteristics of the land.
  • The connections and the spread of the developments appear like a ‘biological’ growth, with adaptation, mutation and replication.

Due to the rapid growth of the cities in India facing the many problems relating to the sustainable Planning of the cities. In India the population increases in the city at a very high rate. In 1981 only 24% of the population lived in the cities but now 31.1% of the population live in the urban areas which increases the pressure on the land of the urban areas which leads to many types of problems in the urban areas. This leads to many problems for the planners in the cities of India. Other challenges for planners’ are-(I) Financial Constraints: Due to resource crunch piecemeal approach. Because of lack of money infrastructure could not be provided. (ii)Implementation Phase Slow acquisition, implementation delays, plan violations, partial implementation of the land use proposals, wavering policies and loopholes, problem of multiplicity of authorities and agencies, financial constraints and lack of enforcement machinery.
