About the Gujarat Coast Drug Seizure:

  • Drugs valued at ₹602 crore were intercepted during the mid-sea operation.
  • All 14 crew members, identified as Pakistani nationals, were apprehended by the authorities.
  • Case handed over to NCB for further investigation.
  • Intelligence suggested the consignment was intended for delivery to unidentified handlers in Tamil Nadu.
  • From Tamil Nadu, the drugs were to be smuggled to Sri Lanka.
About  International Narcotics Control Board:

  • Establishment: Founded in 1968, it oversees UN drug control conventions’ implementation.
  • History: Created by merging the Permanent Central Narcotics Board and the Drug Supervisory Body from earlier conventions.
  • Members: Comprises 13 members elected by the Economic and Social Council, including medical experts nominated by the WHO and government-nominated representatives.
  • Mandate: Ensures adequate drug supplies for medical/scientific purposes, prevents drug diversion, and monitors government control over chemicals used in illicit drug manufacture.

What Is the Narcotics Control Bureau?

  • Establishment: Formed in March 1986 under Section 4(3) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
  • Purpose: Central authority to prevent and combat abuse and illicit trade of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances effectively.
